A new way of life?
2020.08.27

From my point of view, once one has an extended period of free time available to them and of course the disposable income is available, then the best way to enjoy that time is to travel! In Japan that is pretty easy as the country is so large and there are many prefectures that one can venture to by plane or bullet train. If you want to travel further; Russia, China, Korea and Taiwan are a just a few hours away. To me, this is the land of opportunity.

Today is the 20th of April, 2020. It has been a few weeks since the government requested businesses to close and that people stay indoors. The viral motto at the moment is, "Stay home. Save lives. Help stop the Corona virus." It seems as though the virus was allowed to spread unchecked in Japan. A couple of months ago, the decision if the Tokyo 2020 Olympics would be held as planned in July or postponed even though this international virus was claiming hundreds of thousands of lives worldwide seemed to be at the root of the government's lack of proactive measures to contain or control the epidemic. Up to today, we have seen an ever increasing number of patients who are infected and the figure is expected to rise significantly. There is still only 'guidance' or 'recommendations' about social distancing and self-imposed isolation so many people are out as usual, shopping and going to parks, children have free reign over the playgrounds and trains are running as scheduled.

At the sharehouse, there seems to be a new way of life. Many people are doing remote work so the house is busier than before. A few people are taking the matter of being safe seriously. They are wearing masks, staying in their rooms and only going out for the essentials. I admit to not wearing a mask indoors and not isolating myself in my room as some housemates have developed a new socialising dynamic. Those who need social interaction because they cannot go out and enjoy hanging out friends have started to make more frequent visits to the lounge so they can chat, watch movies or work and study together. I hang my head in shame as I am a very social creature so I usually join in instead of distancing myself.

As I am confined to the house, I have had the opportunity to see modern day cavemen walking about the house as men no longer have the need to groom themselves. They roam about unshaven, with shaggy hair, cooking, eating, drinking and gaining weight as they have surrendered themselves to late nights of video gaming, sleeping until five minutes before the start of their work day, taking naps during the day and not making time in their daily routines for exercise. It will be pretty hard to get back into a normal routine.

I have not been out in quite a while. I find myself busy doing things like studying, cooking, personal projects, housework and of course, socialising. My days pass by quickly. I am trying to enjoy this gift of time since I cannot travel locally or abroad. I am trying not to focus on the fact that I have a month's holiday but cannot enjoy overseas trips. For exercise and a change of scenery, I sometimes go to the supermarket and that is enough for now. I am getting quite used to life inside.
