In the woods
2020.12.03

It had been an uncomfortable night. Trying to sleep with another person in a tangled mess on the backseat of a compact vehicle was hard on your back and neck. The facts that it had been cold and if you had needed to use the bathroom, you would have had to walk about four minutes one way in absolute darkness had not helped the situation any. I am the kind of person who knows how to endure though. When it comes to matters of the heart, sure, I like to speak my mind to clear the air but for physical things that put a strain on your muscles and require you to keep going, I am a soldier.

It was about six thirty in the morning and what a beautiful morning it was. The air was crisp and fresh. I could feel the creatures in the woods slowly stirring and starting their daily routines. I stirred but did not start a daily routine. It was a day off and I was somewhere in the woods about a two hour drive from my residence.

I peeked out the window and saw that some of the other campers were fast asleep. To my shock and amazement, I saw the leader of our expedition curled into the feotal position, with nary a covering to keep him warm but fast asleep on a pile or vegetables and miscellaneous items! I quickly shrouded him with the towel I had been using as a blanket in the hopes of making him somewhat warm. As quickly as I did that, I also started trying to remove the ‘debris’ that he was lying so blissfully on. My good deeds however had a negative consequence as I woke him in the process of dragging a bag of squashed spinach from under his slumbering head. His eyes slowly blinked at me, heavy lidded and confused. He whispered a polite ‘thank you’ and drifted off again.

I felt so energized looking around. My companions were all sleeping soundly, tucked away in their owned and rented tents so the campsite was calm and peaceful. Time to freshen up and explore. After the rains of the day before it was hard to imagine that this was the same place. Life is perspective of course! The constant rainfall from the day before had made everything lush and green this morning. Everything seemed more vibrant and alive in this natural landscape.
