"Kids and Bugs in Tokyo"

Kids are Kids,
Kids from Tokyo, Vancouver, Toronto - whateve, it doesn't matter, They're all the same!
All kids love playing with and catching bugs!!!

I can remember collecting various bugs on my fathers farm.
Cicadas, praying mantis, beattles, slugs all sorts of little creepy crawlies.
but I thought this was because I was "from the farm" - never did I think city kids,
and especially kids from Tokyo - would love bugs so much. But they do and man they're lucky!
Japan has HUGHE beattles to play with.

These things are huge - anywhere from like 1" to like 3 or 4" long.
They're all over the place and easy to find too.
Just take a train out into the countryside, Saitama should do fine, and a nice stroll in the woods.
you should find them everywhere stuck on the tree trunks...much like cicada's.

I was working out in Saitama doing a "summer English camp" this year when me and my class decided to
go for a stroll in the farmers field. The old man came out to meet us.
A very friendly out guy....that ended up pulling out this small cage filled with live squirming giant beattles.
"Bik-Kuri-deshita" - I was shocked!

Even though I grew up on a farm I couldn't get my courage up at first to handle them.
But my class - both the boys and girls loved them. They went nuts and they lunged at them.
12 beattles in all - there was one for everyone. (thank God).

I was surprised to see these "Tokyo kids" so eager to handle the bugs, as a "bug boy" myself
I was really impressed!

Oakhouse Guest House
What's About Tokyo Survivor

Hey everyone, I'm from a small farming community in Canada, Population 3000. Quite a contrast with Tokyo, yet I love them both! I came to Japan about 3 years ago and have since then discovered Budo, Ramen, Shimokitazawa and Gyaru-Sone. Gotta love it. I'll be blogging here for Oakhouse for some time and hope to make the most of it. You can bet that the further I go along, the deeper into Tokyo's numerous sub-cultures will I go. So come along with me into my strange miss-adventures and we'll reveal sides of Tokyo few people know. With a population the size of Canada were bound to run into something funky!
Here's to "never stop discovering", Kindly Yours,
Matt
