Getting your license in Japan
2019.05.14

So today I would like to talk about getting your license in Japan as it can be a bit confusing and tiring.  Getting your driving license in Japan can be really easy and cheap if you have a license from one of the following countries Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, or the UK, you are exempt from the licensing exams. All you need to do is complete the paperwork so you can consider yourself super lucky.

If you are not a part from the lucky ones , then your trip to getting a Japanese license is going to get way longer and way more expensive. so lets imagine you don't have a license at all, you will need to join a driving school for 19 hours of driving lessons and 26 hours of informational lessons on how to drive. This can cost anything between 200.000 to 300.000 Yen depending on the school and the plan you choose for yourself. After finishing your schooling you will need to go through a driving test in the school itself which 80 to 90 % of students pass from the first time. Then you will need to go to the licensing center in your city with the certificate you receive from your school that you passed your driving test to go through the written test, when you pass that one,,, then congratulations you are going to have your license shortly. Just note that the school can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months depending on your schedule and how busy the school is.

If you can't afford paying 2000 to 3000 $ or you are simply not interested in going through schooling for a skill you already know. Then you can go directly to the licensing center to do the practical test, I would highly recommend you to memorize the course as well as possible and try to search on how to pass the driving test as it is not as easy as it sounds even if you are an awesome driver as it is estimated that only 5% pass from the first time. You can watch many videos on YouTube to know what to do during your test and just keep at it and don't get frustrated with failures and hopefully at some point you will pass and you will be on your way back home with a driving license in your pocket.

If you can't speak Japanese it would be a good idea to take one of your Japanese speaking mates to the licensing center with you. I can't thank Kotaro my house mate from https://www.oakhouse.jp/eng/ for helping me with the whole process and now I can ride this beautiful puppy.
