Mt. Nabewari is one of the mountains accessible from Tokyo. Me and my housemates in Oakhouse Kichijoji 2 went there for hiking just last week. Autumn leaves are the best around this time of the year.
■ Where it’s located
It takes about two hours from Kichijoji by Odakyu line to the closest railway station, Shibusawa(渋沢)station. Then you take a bus to Okura(大倉). The hiking gate is in walking distance from the Okura bus stop.
A squeaky little bridge over the river.
The hike was about 7 hours in total but it took longer to go down (about 4 hours) because we took the different route (came back to the same Okura bus stop). The hike itself isn’t really tough as the highest point is only 1272m. However, the Okura bus stop is only 290m high so the elevation can be challenging for a beginner. The elevation map can be found here. The second map is the route we took.
It was somewhat early for autumn leaves.
And ofcourse, the Nabeyaki Udon. A widely known specialty at the mountain hut on the top.
The autumn leaves were beautiful but not as colored as we expected (even at the end of November!). It is probably because this winter has been relatively warm compared to previous years.
We decided to go to another mountain closer to Tokyo sometime next week hoping that autumn leaves look better.
