Sharestyle Shinjuku-nishi

Hello everyone in Oakhouseland –
Here is my fourth blog installment chronicling my six year stay and relationship with Oakhouse, the great staff, and life in Oakhouse Sharestyle Shinjuku-nishi Nakano-ku. I have so many joyous moments and lifetime friendships from staying there. Residents came and residents went, but our family style relationships remain our bond. Our sharestyle managers would help everyone to get to know one another by creating events, small gatherings and parties that welcomed all residents and their friends. There were many great times, pictures, foods, stories and laughter. I often just listened to the many dialects and cultural input. It was like a United Nations of Oakhouse. Residents learned to share with one another, rely on one another and trust each other. All barriers were broken down quickly and you never had to go far for a smile or hello. Residents who received care packages from their hometown or country quickly shared them with everyone. Student residents often shared homework and study periods together and some attended the same schools. It was always nice to see residents who were once strangers become inseparable friends, and explore Tokyo and Japan together on trips. Sometime half of the building would empty out during holidays as they would take a road trip together as a sharestyle group to different parts of the country. It was always interesting to see a formally shy resident blossom into a sharestyle group organizer and leader of event planning. It was also rewarding listening to foreign students, who spoke no Japanese language at all, end up speaking well enough to get jobs at firms and businesses in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
Two exceptional students are my former Sharestyle Shinjuku-nishi buddies from Malaysia, Idriis and Khai (pictured). Please try Oakhouse someday in your travels. Life at Oakhouse is number 1!

3 practical reasons why I’m happy with living in the share house

Pancake Party_82

Now the end of march is coming, many of you might be thinking about moving in one of the share houses in Tokyo. As I have been living in a share house (Oakhouse Kichijoji 2) for two years now. Let me tell you 3 practical reasons why I’m happy with the house.

■ You never have to clean anywhere outside your room

IMG_6922

Sharing a house usually comes with some responsibilities. Cleaning up the house is one of them. Some share houses set up some clean up routines and maybe set a rule to take turn to clean up the common areas or shared bathrooms. If you (or a housemate) decide not to be cooperative, life in the house gets uncomfortable (probably disgusting) within a month.

One thing I like about Oakhouse (and it’s an important one) is that there’s no such clean up responsibilities. Oakhouse sends professional cleaning staff at least twice a week (depends on the size of the house) and make sure the common areas are clean.

This means you don’t have to clean anywhere outside your private room. It saves you a lot of time and trouble. You never have to clean the common area, kitchen, shower room, or living room. This is a privilege of living in a share house. (I own a iRobot Roomba to clean my room so I don’t even have to clean my private room. Welcome to the future life! )

Ofcourse you should clean up if you make a mess, like dropping food on the floor or wiping the table after dinner etc.. I’m talking about a common sense here. Also, make sure to wash your dishes!

■ You never miss your package

IMG_6923

Everyone buys everything on Amazon nowadays. Free shipping, next day delivery, all the things that the retail giant offers are hard to reject. Even if you’re not a local Japanese, buying things online might come in handy. Some of my gaijin housemates often ask me to buy something online and pay me in cash because sometimes what they want (usually things they miss from their own country) is hard to find at a local store in Tokyo.

When you do buy things online, receiving the package might be hard if you’re living by yourself. You don’t want to wait at the house all day long just for the package and waste your holiday. If you’re working late, you never be able to receive the package. The delivery staff don’t just put your package in front of your door because they don’t want to be responsible if the package disappears.

It’s a different story if you’re living in a share house. Any of your housemates can receive your package and sign it for you even if you’re not at home. To do this, it might be better to live in a smaller house. so that everyone in the house knows who you are.

■ There are ways to make your rent cheaper

IMG_6924

You can negotiate to lower your rent in Tokyo, but only when renting an apartment and it’s almost impossible if you don’t speak fluent Japanese. Share house companies like Oakhouse don’t usually answer to rent negotiation but there are other ways to make your rent cheaper.

About a year ago, I wrote an article titled “Ways to lower your rent in Tokyo (using oak house system)“. I showed 5 ways to lower your rent living in oakhouse and these tips are still valid now.

Let me tell you the easiest one. Read the No.4 tip in the article above and contact me. As I told you before, I’m currently living in one of the Oakhouse share houses, Oakhouse Kichijoji 2.

Life at Oakhouse Sharestyle

Hello everyone in Oakhouseland –
This is my third weekly blog installment as I continue to journal my splendid 6-year rental relationship with Oakhouse, their professional staff, and life at Oakhouse Sharestyle Shinjuku-nishi in Nakano-ku. Here is a little background information about me: I was a former Los Angeles club and radio deejay before coming to Japan in 1990. I used to produce and spin mixshows at 1580 KDAY (America’s first 24-hour AM Stereo rap station) and 102.3 KJLH (owned by R&B legend Stevie Wonder). In 1990, promoter Dj Ando commissioned me to do some deejay performances in Kumamoto, Kyushu Japan. And thus began my 25-year musical love affair with Tokyo. It was indeed a very exciting period of my life, learning a new language, culture and meeting so many great people. Staying at Oakhouse Sharestyle Shinjuku-nishi helped extend and enhance my experiences of meeting many different kinds of people from around the world.
The kitchen commons area in my building was like a conference of nations all gathering together for meals, television, events and conversation. So many words were exchanged in so many different dialects and everyday you could catch the scent of someone preparing a dish from their native homeland. My curious taste buds were always satisfied with a sample of a residents culinary preparation. As well as food exchanges, residents could sit down with each other and share ideas and topics about news, issues, fashion, etc from their various countries. There was never a dull moment. These were happy and fulfilling moments.
I highly recommend and hope you will contact the friendly staff at Oakhouse the next time you plan your stay in Tokyo. Oakhouse is number 1!

The Sharestyle Shinjuku-nishi Chronicles

Hello everyone in Oakhouseland –
This is my second installment in my weekly series as I continue to chronicle my wonderful 6-year relationship with Oakhouse, their gracious staff and Oakhouse Sharestyle Shinjuku-nishi in Nakano-ku. My story with Oakhouse begins in the winter of 2009. I was in need of living accommodations in short order. I did not have the time to go through the hassles of paying large sums of money for key deposits and finding multiple guarantors to co-sign on my behalf. My very good friend Raymond Johnson suggested Oakhouse. I am not sure if he ever rented from them, but his recommendation was strong and motivational, so I contacted them. After speaking to a representative and giving him some information as to which parts of the city I desired to live, plus my ideal rent budget, we agreed to meet so he could drive me around and show some Oakhouse properties. I chose Sharestyle Shinjuku-nishi in Nakano-ku (close to Shinjuku). Unfortunately there was no rooms available at that moment, but one would be opening soon. So I signed a rental agreement for the next available room. During that interim waiting period, Oakhouse offered me the opportunity to stay at their Oak Hotel, located near Ueno in Tokyo. It was a splendidly quaint and quiet daily stay accommodation with a kind and wonderful staff, good service and Amenities.  I highly recommend it. Below is a picture of Sharestyle Shinjuku-Nishi in Nakano-ku.
