Railway Overview
The line runs for 30.6 km over 11 stations. From around the middle of the line at Kawagoe station, it can split into through services: one, to the Saikyo line and Rinkai line, giving access to Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya, and even Odaiba. The other connects through the Hachiko line from Komagawa to Hachioji. Inside the trains, the diagram marks each as the "Saikyo / Kawagoe line", and the "Kawagoe / Hachiko line". Though these through lines have helped bring commute changes, unfortunately the way the service operates means that you often have to change at Kawagoe to continue on through the line.
Places to see
The JR Kawagoe line is named for Kawagoe, which is also known as "Little Edo" for its preservation of the old Tokyo feeling of hundreds of years ago. Past the shopping street, there is the Maruhiro department store, which has one of 2 rooftop ferris wheels in the country, in the theme park Wanpaku Land. From the ferris wheel you can see out over the whole town, and even to the Chichibu mountains on a clear day, perhaps even Mt. Fuji. Also recommended is Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, which was built to pray for protection for the Kawagoe castle. People come here to pray to the gods for various fortunes. Another spot is the symbol of little Edo, the "Bell of Time". It is said to have been created 400 years ago, and still rings out the time in Kawagoe. Children love the "candy alley", a blog of 20 traditional candy shops which go back to the Meiji period.
Lifestyle
The JR Kawagoe line runs fewer trains than most other lines, about 3 to 4 per hour. However, because from Kawagoe station to the west going toward Omiya, all trains are through service on the Saikyo line, meaning there is easy access to Ikebukuro and Shinjuku. The Kawagoe line also has fewer riders than the Saikyo line, so it can be easy to avoid the typical Saikyo rush. From Kawagoe you can also change to the Tobu Tojo line, meaning that in the worst case scenario you can always get a detour to Kawagoe. The station areas have the shops necessary for daily convenience, but that said, a car might make things even more convenient.
