Mochitsuki Event at Oakhouse Kyoto Kawaramachi – 2026
We are excited to announce that Oakhouse Kyoto Kawaramachi will once again host a Mochitsuki (rice cake pounding) event in 2026!
Freshly pounded mochi will be served in various styles such as ozoni (New Year soup), kinako (soybean flour), soy sauce, and more. Feel free to bring along any side dishes you’d like to enjoy with mochi!
After the Mochitsuki, we will also hold a Kakizome (first calligraphy of the year) session. Both Mochitsuki and Kakizome are traditional Japanese cultural experiences that are rarely available in everyday life, so don’t miss this chance to take part in them.
This is our first event of the New Year, and we warmly invite you to join us in celebrating together. Participation is open not only to Oakhouse residents but also to friends and guests!
Note: Food will be provided by Oakhouse, but please bring your own drinks.


What is Mochitsuki?
Mochitsuki is a traditional Japanese New Year’s event where steamed glutinous rice is pounded with a wooden mallet and mortar to make mochi. It symbolizes wishes for health and happiness in the coming year and is a joyful occasion that brings families and communities together.

What is Kakizome?
Kakizome is the first calligraphy of the year, where people write their resolutions, goals, or auspicious words with a brush and ink. It is a way to refresh the mind and express hopes for growth and success throughout the year.
