Railway Overview
The JR Yamanote line is perhaps the most famous train line in all of Japan, with the largest number of riders. It runs in a loop in both directions, and includes stations like Tokyo, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Sinagawa, and Ueno, and is vastly important for commuters, students, and sightseers. It takes about one hour to make one loop. The rent market along this line is quite fierce, and many people wish to live along it.
Places to see
The Yamanote line is comprised of 29 stations, and by the time the 2020 Olympics rolls around, there will be one more station, between Tamachi and Shinagawa. There are countless things to do and see along this loop, containing a huge amount of the things to see in the 23 Tokyo wards. Many of the stations have seen rapid, recent development, such as the new Hikarie building in Shibuya. Shibuya also has the famous 109 store, for young people's fashions. Ueno station has Ueno Park, Shinobazu Pond, and lots of museums and art galleries. Akihabara station is also called Electric Town, home to all sorts of nerd culture, from computers to anime and idols. Tokyo station has reimagined its classic feel, and also has large shopping centers like Daimaru, Shinmaru building, and Kitte. The brick station building is also not to be missed. Yurakucho is home to Kotsu Kaikan shopping center; Shinbashi has the SL Plaza, and Ikebukuro has Sunshine 60 and Sunshine Aquarium... The Yamanote line just has too much to count!
Lifestyle
Though extremely convenient, the rent prices along this line can be very high. Each area of the loop has its own personality, though many of course are near large office buildings and may not have convenient shops and supermarkets. That said, some of the stations do have nearby residential areas. Tokyo, Ueno, and Shinagawa stations are shinkansen bullet train stops, and from Hamamatsucho and Shinagawa you can also take the Tokyo Monorail and Keikyu line to get to Hanada airport. From Nippori station you can change to Keisei line to get to Narita airport. The Yamanote line is truly the heart of Tokyo's trains.
