Area information of Nakano(Tokyo)
Station overview
Nakano station is in Tokyo's Nakano ward on the Chuo rapid and Sobu local line and the Tozai metro line. It opened in 1889, and was moved to its present location in 1929, with the Tozai line portion opening in 1966. The station serves 146,000 riders per day on the JR portion and 80,000 on the Tozai side. The station is laid out in such a way that changing train lines isn't inconvenient. And because it's the first station on the Tozai line it is easy to find a seat. The JR line is typically crowded but it is right next to Shinjuku.
Places to see
Two of the main things to see near Nakano station are Nakano Sun Plaza and Nakano Broadway. Nakano Sun Plaza is right outside the north exit, and has over 20 floors, with restaurants, a hotel, meeting rooms, wedding halls, and more. There are sold-out concerts every day at the 2,222-seat concert hall. There are restaurants on the lower floors but also very nice restaurants on the top floor with a great view of the city. Nakano Broadway opened in 1966 and has become one of Tokyo's prime sub-culture spots. There are stores catering to all sorts of sub-cultures and hobbies, as well as restaurants.
Lifestyle
Nakano is an important JR station and also lies on the Tozai line, so it is very convenient for Tokyo. You can get to Shinjuku in just 4 minutes, or to Tokyo station between 10 to 20 minutes, or transfer to get to Shibuya or Ikebukuro, all within 20 minutes. The town is also quite lively, with many shops and supermarkets, some open until midnight. There are drugstores and 100 yen shops as well, and of course places to eat and drink. Though the area around the station is lively even at night, near Nakano street you can find nice rentals. The further you get from the station the quieter it is. It may not be quite as safe as other neighborhoods, but it is a convenient area with plenty of shopping, and good for people who live alone.
