Station overview
Nishi-Waseda station is in Shinjuku ward in Tokyo, along the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin line. The Fukutoshin line is fairly new, opening in 2008, so the station is new as well, and development has sprung up around it. There are elevators and escalators connecting the platform to the ticket gate. The trains run toward Shinjuku Sanchome and Shibuya, or Ikebukuro and Wakoshi.
The station has seen an increase in daily riders in recent years, and in 2017 there were 38,739 riders per day. That said, it is on the low end of the Tokyo Metro stations: 98th out of 130.
Places to see
Near Nishi-Waseda station are Genkokuji temple and Ana-Hachimangu shrine, places where you can escape the bustle of the city. Genkokuji was established in 1601, a year after the battle of Sekigahara. It could be said that it was invaluable in promoting the rapid development of Edo, as Tokyo used to be known at the time. Its main hall, gates, bell, and Benzaiten shrine are particularly nice. It is approximately a 5 minute walk from the station. Ana-Hachimangu shrine used to be called Takada Hachimangu. It is dedicated to ancient emperors, Ojin and Chuai, and Empress Jinko, and was established in 1062! Its statue of the Buddhist deity Hotei is designated as an important cultural property of Shinjuku. It also lies partially on an ancient kofun tumulus.
There are many other parks, temples, shrines, and museums near Nishi-Waseda.
Lifestyle
There are several supermarkets near Nishi-Waseda so you will have no problem shopping daily, with one gyomu supermarket open 24 hours. The town has many students so there are many cheap places to eat and drink. Even though it's a student town, it's a comparatively quiet neighborhood, with nearby parks that families enjoy. You can easily get to Shinjuku and Ikebukuro, or even Shibuya in around 10 minutes. Plus in 20 minutes or so you can get to Tokyo or Ueno stations. There is also a lively shopping street.
