Area information of Tama

Outline

Tama city is often called “Tama New Town”, as it is a fast-growing bedroom town with a population of 150,000 people, with many families. It has many parks and walking paths, and has good access to schools and stations without getting too close to busy car roads, so children can walk around safely. No matter where you are in the city you are within a 15-minute walk of a public school. There are department stores and supermarkets at main stations such as Nagayama or Tama Center. It is served by the Keio and Odawara lines, so you can get to Shinjuku in 30 minutes.

Things to see

One place to see in Tama city is Tama Center station. From the station building head toward Parthenon Tama along the street, and you can find many events that take place. Especially in the Christmas season, there is a large Christmas tree installed in the plaza and the whole area is illuminated beautifully. There are also many parks in the area. Narahara park in particular has lines of cherry trees an grassy areas so people can enjoy the blossoms in the spring. You can see Mt. Fuji from here, making for an unforgettable sight.

Lifestyle

Many Tama city residents commute into the central areas of Tokyo. But there are also many high schools and universities, so there are many students that also commute into Tama as well. Tama Center station is also home to the Sanrio Puroland amusement park, and there is plenty of shopping nearby. The Nagayama and Suwa areas have an older population, and due to lower birth rates, a lot of elementary schools are being converted into nursing homes.
