GRAN TACHIKAWA

Unit Type special report

Looking for more privacy? Take a look at share houses with unit types!

Gran Tachikawa is a 10-minute walk from Tachikawa station, which has good access to the rest of the city on the JR Chuo line. Many foreigners are not that familiar with Tachikawa, or even unit type rooms for that matter. That's why in this report we will talk about both!

What is a unit type?

A mix between living alone and living socially

In a unit type share house, there are a small handful of private rooms around 1 shared water unit (which would include bathroom, shower, etc.). Think of it like an apartment with 3 or so bedrooms. At Gran Tachikawa, there are 4 private rooms per 1 shared space (kitchen, dining room, shower, toilet), which is 1 unit. There are 18 total units at Gran Tachikawa, divided into 2 buildings, for a total of 72 people. This way, you can have a more intimate shared space with just the 4 people in your unit, or enjoy the large lounge, theater room, and library in building A if you want to socialize with people from other units in the building. For example, spend most of your week by yourself or just in your unit, and then head to the main lounge with everyone for weekend fun or events!

Secured privacy

The best part about a unit type is that you can better control your lifestyle rhythm. When you want to chat with people you can head to the lounge, or when you want to be alone, just head straight to your room. The most amount of share mates you can have is 4... or hte rest of the building! It all depends on how you want to live your life. Plus with only 4 roommates you can more easily use a shower or kitchen in a relaxed style. In this way you can have more privacy.

Convenient parking spots

It's amazing how much further you can explore when you have a bike. There aren't any rental cycles available, but you can park your bike for free! Also, if you have a car, you can apply to rent a parking space. If there are open spots, even guests can park temporarily.

Manager FAQ

We asked the manager about questions they usually receive from residents!

Q. What's the best part about a unit type?
The main lounge is separate from each unit, so depending on your mood you can choose to be more private, or more social. Plus with a unit you can more easily get to know your other immediate roommates. Also you won't have to wait too long for the shower or washing machine or kitchen.

Q. What can you tell us about the makeup of the house?
You can see the breakdown of gender, ages, and nationalities on the house page.

Q. Do we need to bring anything for the kitchen or bathrooms?
Oakhouse provides toilet paper, dish soap, garbage bags, and some other items.

Q. Is there staff on-site?
Yes, the manager lives in the building too. You can ask the manager anything during business hours.

Q. What kind of people live here?
Tachikawa station is on the Chuo line so a lot of people here work in Shinjuku. We also have lots of foreigners on working holiday visas, or just visitors to Japan. Some of them go to a Japanese school nearby. There are also lots of women at Gran Tachikawa, who tend to enjoy the privacy an ease of use of the units. There is free LAN internet in the room so some people work from home. The house is about 30 to 40% foreigners so it's quite international.
