Station overview
Mikawashima station is in Tokyo's Arakawa ward, on the JR Joban express line. The station opened in 1905, and was expanded in 2011. It is a simple station, but does have an elevator and escalator, but just one exit. it sees about 12,000 riders per day, one of the fewest in the 23 special Tokyo wards.
Places to see
Some spots to see near Mikawashima station are the Asakura Museum of Sculpture and Tennoji temple. The Sculpture Museum is a bit of a walk from the station, but the exhibits change every 3 months, and they display many beautiful and historical pieces. They also have workshops and special talk events. They also sell books and other goods in the museum shop that make good souvenirs.
Tennoji temple is devoted to the Amida Nyorai, and was established in 1274. It is an important tangible cultural artifact of Taito ward, and has many important treasures in its storehouse. It has many unique points, making it a worthwhile visit.
In this area there are many temples and shrines that date from the Edo period and before.
Lifestyle
There is a supermarket right next to Mikawashima station, as well as others within walking distance. There is also a drug store right outside the station, so it is convenient for day-to-day shopping.
Other nearby stations are Shin-Mikawashima, Nishi-Nippori, and Nippori. You can get to Ueno without having to transfer, or to Tokyo station in 10 minutes or Ikebukuro in 20. You could get to Shinjuku or Shibuya in around 30 minutes as well, making this a good spot for commuting workers or students.
There is a police box outside the station, so this is a safe and family friendly area, though of course also popular with single residents as well. It's proximity to Ueno is a particular strong point.
