The Nakamura Tsune Atelier Museum is 800 meters from Shimo-Ochiai station, and is dedicated to the work of Japanese painter Tsune Nakamura. It reproduces his art studio as it was during his life, and is housed in a traditional building. Displays of his work have detailed and easy-to-understand inscriptions. It's a great window into the life of an artist in Taisho-era Japan.
The Stamp Museum is also quite interesting, collecting and displaying postage stamps from all over the world. It's worth a visit whether you're a stamp collector or not.
The Shimo-Ochiai area is quite safe, and still quite close to Shinjuku. Plus you can walk to Takadanobaba station easily to take even more lines and get to other Tokyo areas. It has many quiet residential neighborhoods that you might be surprised it's so close to Shinjuku. There are a supermarket and drugstore near the station.
