Area information of Chofu

Outline

Chofu city is in west Tokyo, bordering 5 cities in the Tama region as well as Setagaya ward and Kawasaki city in Kanagawa prefecture. By train you can get to Shinjuku or Sagamihara, and there are plenty of bus routes that can take you to different places. With all these transportation routes, plus the highway interchange, Chofu is often called the gateway to the Tama region. Chofu also has 5 universities and other institutes of learning, so there are many students. It has also been called home to many movie studios, and there are still movie productions in the south of the region.

Things to see

Chofu may be best known for the Jindai Botanical Gardens. It boasts the largest rose garden in Tokyo, and attracts many people in the spring and autumn. There is also a large greenhouse with azaleas, and other areas with many other plants. You can see plum or cherry blossoms in the spring. There is a spring that runs from the gardens to Jindaiji temple, so you can stroll around the water gardens. Jindaiji is also a popular spot, with many people making a day out of both the gardens and the temple. Outside the gardens are planted areas representing regions such as Musashino, Okutama, and the Izu islands, with free walking courses.

Lifestyle

Chofu is somewhat of a bedroom town. It is popular for being situated 20 minutes to Shinjuku by train, and there are many single houses as well as apartment buildings. Due to the large amount of students that come here, businesses have been aiming toward the young and single demographic. There are American football and rugby fields, and Chofu even has a pro basketball team and soccer stadium, perfect if you like to go watch sports.
