Area information of Sumida

Area outline

Sumida ward is 3km to the northeast of the center of Tokyo, surrounded by the Arakawa and Sumida rivers.
It is 14 sq.km and has 257,000 people, which makes it somewhat crowded. Recently, Tokyo Sky Tree has opened in the ward, which has contributed to the ward's growth. By 1995 the population was dwindling, but it has been increasing ever since the completion of Tokyo Sky Tree, and thanks to the Toei Asakusa, JR Sobu, Keisei Oshiage, and Tobu Sky Tree lines, it is easier than ever to get to and from Sumida ward. In addition to public transportation, convenient highways run through the ward as well so you can easily get outside Tokyo. There are also many places to relax alongside the river and enjoy sports and nature.

Things to see

Sky Tree is the most popular spot in Sumida ward now. 634 meters tall with a viewing deck 350 meters up, you can see out over all of Tokyo. Even Tokyo Tower looks small from here. There is a 360-degree viewing platform 450 meters up.
Also of interest is the Firework Material Collection in Ryogoku, where you can see the history of Japanese fireworks from the Edo period. The Ryogoku stadium is host to sumo tournaments, and there is a sumo museum there as well. Nearby is the Edo Tokyo Museum, where you can see how Tokyo changed from the Edo period, as well as a reconstruction of the Nihonbashi bridge.

Lifestyle

Tourists have increased in number ever since Sky Tree was completed, bringing in a lot more people during the day.
As more any more people move here because of high schools and universities, more shopping and businesses have developed in areas such as Kinshicho, in addition to the shopping center at Tokyo Sky Tree called Solamachi, which has almost everything you can think of. Near Kinshicho is a big multiplex move theater and amusement park, so it is very easy to live here.
