Area information of Kita

Area overview

Several train lines cross Kita ward, including the JR Saikyo and Tohoku lines, Saitama railway line, and Tokyo Metro Nanboku line. It has three distinct areas: Takinogawa, Oji, and Akabane, but they have long been healthy business areas so a Japanese downtown feel still pervades. There are 300,000 people living in Kita ward, so it is a big city with many office buildings as well, but about 176,000 of these people tend to work or go to school outside the ward. Around Akabane station in particular there are large supermarkets and department stores for easy and convenient shopping. The Arakawa and Sumida rivers flow nearby so there are parks where you can escape from the city bustle.

Things to see

There are many things to see in Kita ward. Near Nishigahara station on the Nanboku line is Kyu-Furukawa Gardens, a famous western-style garden famous for its roses. It lights up spectacularly at night. Asukayama Park is a park near Asukayama station on the Toden Arakawa line, which also has various museums with displays regarding the prehistoric Jomon and Yayoi periods and archeological things. There is also a Japanese paper museum. Near Oji station is the Otonashi Shinsui Park, a place of natural beauty where you can find respite from the city. Its sakura trees bloom beautifully in the spring, and you can also enjoy pretty hydrangeas.

Lifestyle

Because of its convenient transportation options, Kita ward is often seen as an attractive bedtown. It has plenty of shopping and groceries around its major stations, as well as lively shopping streets near Akabane, Oji, and Tabata stations. These shopping streets maintain a sort of nostalgic old style feel, with many home-style restaurants and drinking establishments.

Area information of AkabaneStation

Akabane station is in Tokyo's Kita ward, and is on many train lines. Due to its convenience many people change trains here. It opened in 1885. Some improvements were made in 1998, and the Ecute shopping building was opened in 2011. Safety doors were added to the platform in 2017. The station sees 96,000 riders daily, one of the highest for a JR station.
It is quite a wide station, with several escalators and elevators.
