An British Christmas dinner at my friend’s place

IMG_8865

It’s a little bit late to talk about but my friends and I did a Christmas party on the 25th of December. Thomas invited a group of friends to have an authentic Christmas dinner at his place. Hard to say no to this kind of event especially when it’s about food.
I was surprised to know that he is cooking a turkey for dinner. I’ve had turkey before but it was in the United States. I’ve never had turkey in Japan and I didn’t think it’s available here.
Thomas told me that there’s this French supermarket where you can get all the stuff. Everything they have is frozen though. Anyway, it’s cool to have a supermarket like that.
I met Thomas when he was living in Oakhouse Kichijoji 2. He already moved out but he still lives in Kichijoji. He lives in a share house and the kitchen is very nice. The best part is that there’s an oven in the common space. I guess that’s a must when you try to cook a Christmas turkey.

Preparing and lots of waiting

A frozen whole size turkey takes a lot of time to defrost. Thomas said he moved his turkey into the fridge three days before but it was still partially frozen after two days so he had to put it on the running water. I had no idea but it apparently not just putting in the oven. You need to do some stuffing with onion and bread, season it, cook veggies as a side dish, make a gravy. The dinner was from 7pm but he actually start doing things at 2pm on the same day. This kind of things really take some time.

IMG_88451

I arrived very early so I did a little help while he was cooking. Mostly just carrying things though. I left the actual cooking to good hands. The whole turkey barely fit in the oven and the surface of the ski was turning brown quite quickly before heating inside the entire meat. It turned out to be all right in the end but you might want to check the size of the oven before everything.
We took the turkey out of the oven every now and then to see if the cooking is going okay. The last thing we want is to burn the entire thing. Other than that, we had a plenty of time to kill and this is what we found in the kitchen/dining area.

image_preview (7)

After a few round, people start showing up and preparing other food. Everyone was pretty hungry by then. Other things like, veggies, potato, gravy did not take much time.

An authentic Christmas dinner

Here! The turkey is done. It was huge and cutting was another challenge, not because it was hard but there seems to be a certain way to do it according to our mighty chef.

IMG_8871

The turkey was great and the mashed potato was such a nice addition.
Some of us brought more food along so turkey was not the only food we had.

Dessert time

After the meal, we had some dessert. Apparently eating ice cream is supposed to be the thing according to Thomas.

IMG_8864

It was such a satisfying meal on a Christmas day. It was so much work for the chef to prepare and cook everything. Next year I would love to help and actually do some stuff for cooking.

IKEA hotdog party at Tachikawa Garden Town

top1_ikeahotdog1

Hotdog party is one of the things I wanted to do for a long time. My wife Momo and I finally made it happen on the Christmas Eve just last week. We invited our friends Doritol and Poke-chan who recently got married. They visited our apartment for the first time.

Where it all started

Why hotdog? It’s actually really random but we found this song on Twitter and it was kind of a meme for a while.

It’s really simple but funny and catchy at the same time. People tweeting this song was like “this song keeps repeating over and over in my head!” I totally understand. It happened to me too.
Momo and I heard it once and we were laughing for a while lol. It’s dumb but all the elements melody, lyrics s etc… really stick for some reason. I also heard the composer doesn’t know Japanese at all.
Anyway, that’s where we got the idea or more like hearing this song made us want to eat hot dog lol

IKEA’s hotdog set

Naturally, IKEA was our first choice. There’s a IKEA store in Tachikawa and it’s very conveniently located even if you don’t own a car. IKEA stores are usually located close to the port and it’s usually far away from train stations. IKEA Tachikawa must be one of rare cases.
Anyway, IKEA’s hotdog is one of the things I always get every time I have a chance to go there. It’s really cheap as 80 yen and good for the price.
Many people know about this hotdog but I bet only a few knows about the take away hotdog set available at the shop.

ikeahotdogset1

There is sometimes a sale like this. 10 buns with 10 sausages. There are also toppings like fried onions, pickles, and sauces like ketchup, mustard available at the shop too. We got them all and made the authentic IKEA hotdog at the house.

IMG_0430

The hotdog was soooo good! It was probably because you prepare your own hotdog. I guess the IKEA magic ( you’re happier with the product if you assemble the furniture by yourself) is there with the hotdog as well.
After the hotdog and cakes, we watched the movie Home Alone. It’s one of the movies that keep showing on TV during Christmas holidays in Japan.

スクリーンショット 2018-12-31 21.22.14

This little party was going on around 5 or 6pm. We had some coffee afterwords and called it a day.

Overall, it was a fun party. I guess it’s not really much like a Christmas thing to do but I guess that’s okay. My friend Thomas already told me that he is planning some authentic Christmas dinner for friends on the night of Christmas day. I guess that’s something I’ll write about on the next article! Have a nice Christmas holiday 🙂

Joon’s farewell party at Kichijoji 2

IMG_8736cut1

I guess everyone knows our New Year’s holiday is something similar to Christmas holiday. This one especially is somewhat special compared to the previous ones because it’s the end of the Japanese era, Heisei. There’s a Japanese era which is linked with emperor’s reign. The current emperor already announced to step down from his title. This year is going to be the last one in Heisei era.

It does not mean much to our daily life, to be honest. Probably the biggest influence would be that we have more holidays in the year of 2019. We have 10 consecutive days off in May.

Anyway, December is a party month in Tokyo. Everyone’s schedule gets fully marked by the end of November. It is also a month that people prepare to change their life for April. For many people, April is a month to start a new life. Many companies start a new fiscal year, new business, new relocation for employees, new school year etc… This is why March is a month to move and January and February is the month that people start looking for new houses to move in.

Our friend Joon decided to move out Oakhouse Kichijoji 2 at the end of December. I was glad to hear he acted earlier and found a new place for him and his fiance. I knew he had been looking for places for a while and I understand sharing a 6 tatami room can be small. It’s understandable but it’s also sad to see him moving out. Someone in the house threw a party and I was invited. It was on the 22nd of December 2019.

A party that started on time

Oakhouse Kichijoji is such a fun house to hang around. It’s a good community as well. Many people who used to live there keep coming back for parties every once in a while. This party was no exception. People like me, Thomas, Ara don’t live in Kichijoji 2 anymore but we all came for Joon.

This party especially was one of the best ones that I’ve seen in a few years. A good number of people, good food, good alcohol… what surprised me the most, however, was that the party started on time. As far as I remember party in Kichijoji 2 never start on time. If you say start at 8pm, it means start at 9pm. Somehow this was not the case. I showed up at 9:30pm but most food was gone already and the chefs started cooking again! I was pretty hungry at the time I reached there so I myself helped them cook!

IMG_8718

There were many kinds of food on the table. Some Korean food, Takoyaki, chicken rice etc… Joon told everyone to bring or wear something in red. I guess you see many of the people are wearing red. or the food is red. Korean food is a good choice because their food is always red and spicy!

IMG_8722

There’s a big takoyaki plate in Kichijoji 2 and I saw it in good use. Takoyaki is always the best option to feed a large amount of people at once.

IMG_8716

Kimchi Tofu is something I noticed on the table. I thought it’s a great idea for parties. It’s probably very simple: just putting kimchi on top of the diced tofu and it looks great. Perfect finger food for parties.

IMG_8726

Just after 30 mins of arrival, the tables were filled with food. We got some new people joined the party as well. They were not originally sign up for this party to join probably but that’s totally fine and this is like a typical party thing in Kichijoji 2. It was a farewell party for Joon but there were so many people and I bet some did not even know Joon. That’s totally okay and I like this kind of free style party. Not everyone knows each other.

I guess Japanese people in general are not used to this kind of party. If this house was a house with 90% Japanese residents, this party would be something very different.
First, the party organizer would only invite people who she/he knows well and everyone else would not be welcomed. It means you’re not welcomed to invite your friend to the party even if you’re invited. It kind of defeats the purpose of partying in the first place but that’s an easy mistake for westerners I guess. Party would start on time and organizer would collect money for food and drinks. Everyone would probably have their own seat in a tiny space and you don’t get to move around to talk to other people than the person sitting next to you.

IMG_8752
Somehow arm wrestling has been started…

Many people in Tokyo love party drinking (nomikai) and there are countless izakaya (dining bar) to have excellent quality of food and drinks but I don’t think I like the style much. I like the kind of party I see in Kichijoji 2 much much better.
I guess it’s a good place for Japanese people to experience what a real party would be like.

Christmas Party at Gran Tachikawa

image_preview (2)

Just last week, my friends and I headed to Gran Tachikawa. It’s one of four Oakhouse residents in Tachikawa and pretty popular as I only see a few vacancies when I look at the website.

I know the manager in the area and he told me about the party. He was still planning his party theme at the time he told me about it but I said yes on the spot.

Ever since I moved to Tachikawa in April 2018, I noticed there are some parties hosted by Oakhouse but I was never interested. I guess it was because I did not have people to go with. I made some friends in Tachikawa Garden Town right after I moved in but it took some time to get to know each other well. I finally get to know them well after I started playing badminton with them. Now, I hang out with them almost every week on Friday at Shibasaki gym ( one of two public gyms in Tachikawa city)

■ The reason why it was easy to blend in ■

The Christmas party was on the 10th of December and it was going to be at the common space in Gran Tachikawa. There were already some people who live in the building and there was enough food on the table. Free of charge of course.
I went there with three of my friends. Two of them live in Tachikawa Garden Town and one of them live in social residence Hanakoganei.

I initially expected it would be hard to blend in because usually people have their own group/friends to talk to at the house but it was easy to blend in, surprisingly. I started having conversations with the local Gran Tachikawa-ers and found out why quickly.

The people who were at the party didn’t really know each other as well. Apparently, people in Gran Tachikawa do not have much chance to get to know each other. They certainly have a nice common space where everyone in the building can use. The shared space even comes with a big nice kitchen where you can cook or party or watch TV. A mini theater room and a study room was also in the same space. The people who came to the party on that day are definitely the ones who want to hang out with other people. They say they do come to the living room sometimes but they have not really seen anyone using that space. The people who we talked seemed happy that we were there. That was probably why it was easy to talk to them.

image_preview (4)

It was a small surprise that I got to drink hot wines at the party. The manager made a full pot of it and it was very good in my opinion. I had some authentic ones in Germany before but it’s definitely harder to find in Japan. I am not sure what kind of spice is supposed to be used to make hot wine but cinnamon should be one of them. It has a distinct flavor and it brought me back to the day I was in Germany.

After some eating/drinking and socializing, we started playing games. It was only one day after the new Super Smash on Nintendo Switch came out. We all got to play because one of the guys who live in Gran Tachikawa had the game and console. It was great but it took some time to get used to the new game system.

image_preview (3)

It was such a fun time and we should definitely do more often. I told the people I met them there about the weekly badminton match in Garden Town so some of them might come and join us soon. We could always come back to the living room in Gran Tachikawa as well. It’d be such a waste if we don’t use the space at all. I guess we know about this well because we do not have a common space in Tachikawa Garden Town.
