Using HotCook in Oakhouse

maybetop_hotcook

Ever since I have moved in Tachikawa Garden Town in March 2018, cooking is something that I do more often than ever. I guess it’s because there’s a private kitchen in the house and there are many supermarket available in Tachikawa. I was happy with the kitchen in Oakhouse Kichijoji 2 too but it’s always nice to have your own kitchen.

A slow cooker called HotCook is something I got a couple of weeks ago and so far I really like it. I wanted to use this cooker for a long time because it has been one of the most popular cooking equipment for years in Japan. You can find many positive reviews online. On this post, I tell you what HotCook does and how it changed my diet.

■ It’s an automated waterless pot

I’m not sure if you know what a waterless pot is. Staub and LE CREUSET is one of the well-known brands in Japan. It’s a pot made of metal (usually cast iron). The body is heavy like skillet and the heavy lid seals what’s inside when cooking. You do not need to add any water for this type of pot because water comes out of the ingredients and steam by itself.
Usually, adding water is a necessary process if you’re cooking something in a pot to prevent everything from getting burnt. You do not have to add any water with a waterless pot. This makes the food tastes much much better.
HotCook is basically the same as these pots, except that almost everything is automated. All you have to do is to cut ingredients, put everything in HotCook, and press a start button.

price_hotcook1

For the record, HotCook is not cheap though. The photo below is the same model I got and it’s almost 50,000 Yen. It looks almost the same as rice cooker but the cheapest rice cookers are available around 3,000 Yen. Well, I guess it’s not fair to compare HotCook with rice cookers because rice cookers cannot really do the waterless cooking (even though the lid can seal the food inside). If you compare with Staub and LE CREUSET, which are known to be expensive pots, you understand that the HotCook is not too expensive. Besides, with HotCook, you do not have to be careful with fire as it’s all electric. That’s something very helpful especially for a family with a baby in the house.

■ HotCook stirs food inside automatically!

This is one of the things I like. HotCook has stirring wings and it stirs food inside while cooking. If you’re cooking any food with a pan, you have to stay close to the fire and keep stirring so that food doesn’t get burnt or change fire settings a few times. You do not have to do any of these with HotCook. The photos below are the examples when I set spare ribs and when it’s cooked. You can see that I can just put everything in the HotCook and the machine does the rest.

スクリーンショット 2018-11-03 12.34.25

The stirring wings look like the photo below. The wings keep rotating while cooking, makes the food evenly cooked. The little projections on the surface of the lid make the steam water drip. This is the same mechanism as the waterless pot I mentioned earlier.

stir_unit1

Me and my wife Momo made tried several kinds of food so far. We have been trying the dish that has to simmer for a while like a curry, stew, and tomato source. What I liked the best is any type of curry and spare ribs. I did not know that it can cook something that is not watery.

prepare_cook_image3

■ Adding the right amount of salt is tricky

At the very first time, I made the meat sauce, I felt it wasn’t salty enough. It’s hard to know what’s the right amount of salt because HotCook doesn’t lose much water during the cooking process which is very different from ordinary cooking.

As long as I can see from other users of HotCook, 0.6% salt of the total weight would be an ideal. I haven’t tried this yet but I guess I’ll try next time. I usually add salt without measuring but I guess it’s not a good idea for a cooker like this.

pasta_hotcook1

Soup is something we did not cook before but now we do with HotCook. We did cook three kinds of soup so far. All good but my favorite is pumpkin. It was very smooth with milk and it was better than the pumpkin soup I’ve had in a restaurant. It was even good when it’s cold.

cooked1

■ Stress-free automated cooking

I can say I’m very happy with HotCook and it really changed our every day diet. The best part of this product is not just the quality of food it makes but also that we don’t have to watch over the fire during the cooking. Cooking is not always easy especially with a baby in the house. Even though HotCook did not make the entire process automated (you still have to cut ingredients!), it still saved a lot of time and it’s a big help for people like us.
Would there be a day in the future that cooking is no longer a house work for us? Well, I’d say HotCook is half way there at least.

Camping at Lake Motosu

IMG_7917

The 8th of October 2018 was a national holiday called 体育の日 or sports day. It’s an annual holiday that intended to encourage people to play sports or pay attention to health in general. All public gyms in the entire country is open for public and free of charge.

On the same weekend, me and my friends in Oakhouse Kichijoji 2 decided to go to camping in Yamanashi prefecture. October is usually the last chance to enjoy camping with lighter gears. Every one of us had a tent. As long as we find a camping site, a few hundred yen is only what we need to pay to stay the night.
After weeks of discussion, Thomas finally stuck a pole in the sand. Kouan, is the name of the camping site that he found on the internet and it’s a camping site located at the side of Lake Motosu.

スクリーンショット 2018-10-24 23.54.03

Kouan – camping site at Lake Motosu
https://kouan-motosuko.com/en/

I did not know about the site or the lake but they looked nice on the website. A few hundred yen for a night sounded like a good deal too. One of us, Shohei, got a car from his dad, which made the entire trip much easier and less expensive than we originally imagined.

There was a concern, rather big one, came up just a few days before the day of departure. Typhoon. It was supposed to be a big one approaching from the south and the weather forecast didn’t look so good. We talked about this but in the end, we decided to take a chance.

Some thoughts are behind this decision. The first day we arrive at the camping site might be raining a little bit but the next day seems to be sunny. It does not get too cold at night and it’s just four guys staying at the lake side. It was a concern but it did not seem to be serious enough to cancel it. Besides, it was the only date all four of us can make it. We found out later that going for camping on this day was actually a good idea.

On the departure day, we woke up super early in the morning. Guys in Kichijoji got in the car first and I waited for them to come pick me up in Tachikawa Garden Town. They arrived at Tachikawa around 8am.

IMG_7897

It’s a two-hour long road trip ahead of us! We never really take a car in Tokyo, simply because we never have to. It was so exciting until we got caught in a long, tiring traffic jam.

IMG_7903

Apparently, there was a car accident somewhere around Hachioji and the highway ahead of us were all jammed. We were only as fast as 20km/hour at max and this was a big turn off. It took us about 5 hours to get to our destination. We dropped by some local shops for food and fishing warms on the way. The road was mostly boring but the last 10km was actually very beautiful.

IMG_7906

We were already in Yamanashi prefecture and the scenery we saw from the car window was something that we don’t usually get to see in Tokyo. It was kind of odd that we rarely saw local supermarket. We did find some shops but it was nothing like what we see as typical supermarket chains in Tokyo. I really don’t think that’s the only place that local people go for grocery shopping. I guess everyone owns a car so they drive more than half an hour to go to a bigger supermarket like Costco. or they don’t need to go to supermarket in the first place because they all have their own farming land and they can eat their own veggies.

IMG_7909

Would you be surprised to know that this photo was actually taken 1km before we reach Lake Motosu. It looks too high in altitude for any lake to exist. I thought so too. The car went up and up for like 20 mins to reach this high ground. Surprisingly, the car did not descend. Instead, we went in the tunnel for like 5 mins. We got out of the tunnel and the Lake Motosu was right in front of us.

IMG_7917

What a beautiful lake! It was breathtaking. I did not expect that the water in Lake Motosu would be so clean. I especially loved the color of the water. I’ve never seen this color of the water in the lake. I guess there’s no room for water to get polluted because it’s located in such high ground. No human activity, except for campers like us, can pollute this lake because the cities are located below the lake.

Kouan camping site was located right at the lake side. We had a choice to camp by the lake side or in the forest. It was already crowded with people and most spaces was taken but we found ourselves a tiny spot to build a tent for four of us together.

We were famished by the time we secured the spot and built our own tent. BBQ was our next move. Ahmed, brought his chicken marinated with some special secret Egyptian spices. Along with the veggies, we did some decent BBQ to satisfy our hunger.

IMG_7940

IMG_7941

We were finally enjoying something that decent person would call camping. It did not last long though. It started raining while we were still BBQ-ing.

IMG_7943

We could see the rainstorm coming toward us from the other side of the lake. It was so desperate because all we can do is to hide in the tent and abandon fire and all the food we grilled.

Fortunately, it stopped raining by sunset and we could enjoy the rest of the camping outside the tent, which was a big relief for us. We did campfire for hours and hours drinking tea. That was such a peaceful moment of the day. I was surprised to see the bright stars in the middle of the night. I bet this is something we never get to see in the city of Tokyo.

On the next day, we woke up almost at the sunset. To be honest, no one had a good sleep because we slept too close to the water. The sound of the tide was so loud. I opened the tent and this was the view.

IMG_7969

Mt. Fuji looks absolutely beautiful. This was the first moment we saw Mt. Fuji because it was cloudy on the day we arrived at the camping site. I can see why it has been a cultural symbol for hundreds of years.

IMG_7996

Even though it was cloudy and partially rainy on the first day, I think we came on the right day to the camping site. On the second day, we left the camping site so early like 9am because it was too hot. The second day was sunny but it doesn’t mean it’s comfortable. I’d say a cloudy day is the best day for camping.

If you’re thinking about camping, these places that we went, Lake Motosu and Kouan camping site, was a great place to visit.

The day after a typhoon hits Tokyo

IMG_7855_top4

Japan is known as a country of natural disasters and it is not an exaggeration. This year especially was a year that many people were affected. Around the first week of October, there was a strong typhoon coming to Tokyo.
The forecast kept repeating that this specific typhoon is one of the strongest ones in history. This probably caught everyone’s attention to prepare for it. It was the weekend that typhoon hit. That is also one of the reasons that people had time to prepare. There’s always one or two typhoon every year that are too strong for kids to go to school. Shops are closed, trains stop, no people on the street. For some reasons, many offices won’t be closed even on a day like this. Poor salary men don’t get to go home after trains stop. Fortunately this wasn’t the case on that day.
The typhoon hit at night in Tokyo. The wind was extremely strong and I felt the chance that the wind might damage the window. Could it actually happen? I had no idea.

Tachikawa Garden Town is as safe as designated evacuation spot

Even though I was worried about the windows, I knew the building itself would be safe. There are many designated evacuation spot around your neighborhood in case there’s a massive natural disaster such as earthquake. The spots are usually government buildings, schools, public gyms. These buildings are made of reinforced concrete (鉄筋コンクリート) and most likely designed for the biggest earthquake that could happen in the country. Tachikawa Garden Town, which is where I live, is made of reinforced concrete.

Inokashira park on the next day

I had a hard time sleeping that night because of the strong wind and the noise of the wind. The next day, however, was the sunniest sky I’ve seen in awhile. The photos below are taken in Inokashira Park.

IMG_7864

I’ve lived in Oakhouse Kichijoji 2, which is basically located next to this park. I had never seen the park like this. I was imagining how it would be like to take a walk on the night this happened. Any human beings would be dead or seriously injured. Even if you’re injured, there’d be no one else there for you.

IMG_7854

I had a sense of awe to see such unrealistic scenes in such familiar looking places. Next time you hear typhoon in Japan, make sure to stay indoors.

IMG_7857
