The best ramen restaurant in Tachikawa, Toto

IMG_20200213_123403

Having lived in Tachikawa for two years now, I’ve tried quite a few restaurants around the area. Living in Tachikawa Garden Town, all the restaurants around Tachikawa station are in walking distance. I’ve already posted several recommended restaurants in Tachikawa but let me tell you the best ramen restaurant in Tachikawa.

Even though Ramen is not the healthiest choice of food available in Tokyo, it is probably the most common food to find in the city. The thing about ramen is that everyone has their version of favorite ramen and there’s no single ramen that everyone likes. Ichiran, one of the most well-known pork base ramen brands, is still my favorite pork base ramen but I’m only happy with eating their ramen just sometimes, definitely not every week.
If you like something more simple and local, try Toto(魚魚)in Tachikawa. It is a family-run Tachikawa based Ramen restaurant. The restaurant is located a bit of a walk (15 mins) from Tachikawa north exit. Considering the fact that there are countless ramen shops within 5 mins walk from the station, 15 mins walk is a challenge unless you know how good their ramen is.

Toto(魚魚)

Toto was nominated at 11th Next Generation Ramen Summit (https://ramen.yahoo.co.jp/detail/shirunashi02/) powered by Yahoo Japan. As well as their soy sauce flavor soup and salt flavor soup ramen, it’s famous for it’s Abura Soba, which is basically ramen without soup.

IMG_20200213_121755

Speaking of Ramen, Ramen Square in Tachikawa is the place to go if you want to try out different ramens at the same location. There are several different ramen brands selling their ramen on the 2nd floor of the building 1 min from Tachikawa station. It is quite hard to pick one ramen because they all look great. Those ramen shops have been competing with each other and you can vote for your favorite ramen every once in a while. Toto won the first prize at the Ramen Square back in 2013.

Simple but unforgettable

As you can see the menu, there are not too many kinds of ramen available in Toto which is not necessarily a bad sign. I tried 3 kinds of ramen at this place and they did not disappoint me at all. The flavor is fairly simple without being too oily. I tried soy sauce and salt flavor on my first visit and both ramens were something hard to forget. It took a while for me to go back to this ramen place but it is simply because of the distance from the station. My second ramen there was as good as the first time which is a good sign.
Oily ramens, like Tonkotsu ramen in Ichiran, are great too but you don’t want to eat the oily ones too often otherwise you get sick of it pretty soon. I still love eating oily ones but it’s not every week thing. It’s more like less than a month thing.
Toto’s ramen place looks just like any other ramen restaurants. You’re supposed to buy a ticket at the ticketing machine right next to the main gate. There are more counters than a table but it is a place where you can go with 4-5 people at max.

I ordered their salt flavor ramen on the day I visited in February. I recommend this flavor if you’re here for the first time. I am not too sure what the base is for their soup but I guess it’s fish judging by the name of the restaurant.

Salt flavor ramen

I would say this is the best ramen I found in Tachikawa so far. It’s definitely worth a try if you’re living in Tachikawa or just dropping by.

Korean food lunch with my former housemates Joon and Yun

20200202_200213_0002

Earlier in February, I visited my former housemate Joon and his wife Yun who lives in Kokuryo.
We have been good friends since I used to live in OAKHOUSE KICHIJOJI 2 a few years ago. Both of us have been quite busy with life and career these years but we try to see each other every once in a while. I went their apartment in Higashi Yokohama about half a year ago and went to Korea to see their wedding. Now they moved to a new place in Kokuryo a couple of months ago. I wanted to see their place for a long time. Every time me and my family visit them, they always welcome us with some authentic Korean food and that’s what I enjoy the most. Joon is really good at cooking Korean food. He used to cook often at Kichijoji 2 and the amount of food he cooks is really a lot every time. It’s as if intentionally cooks so much that he can share with his housemates.

UR apartment in Kokuryo

The apartment Joon and Yun lives is one of many apartments owned by UR (Urban Renaissance Agency), one of the biggest Incorporated Administrative Agencies. UR is a pretty well-known option to find a decent sized apartment in Tokyo. Their apartments are usually pretty big, as big as thousands of people live in a single structure. There are 520 households in their apartment and the space inside was pretty big, 40-60sqm.

スクリーンショット 2020-03-01 0.47.22

There are two rooms, kitchen and bathroom and the entire space is bigger than Oakhouse Tachikawa Garden Town which is where I live now in Tachikawa. There are 13 stories in the building and there’s a little park for kids to play around on site.

Korean BBQ with lots of veggies

Joon told me that the lunch is Samgyeopsal, a well-known Korean BBQ. I saw Joon cutting and grilling a thick pork slices in the kitchen.

スクリーンショット 2020-03-01 0.49.19

The food came out with so much veggies just like how we see in a Korean restaurant in Korea. I love Korean food in general for the fact that it usually comes with a lot of vegetables. That’s something I don’t see in many restaurants in Japan.
The grilled pork was so delicious that we ate as much as we can on that day.

Chinese tea after lunch

Joon’s family is running a tea shop in Korea and Joon is my go-to guy when it comes to tea. My favorite is Taiwanese woolong tea but I like all kinds of Chinese tea in general.
It’not just the flavor I like about Chinese tea. Chinese tea in general, in my opinion, tastes great after you eat some oily food.

IMG_20200202_144632

Unlike Japanese tea, you don’t need to throw away the tea leaves after drinking first or second cup. You can keep refilling the hot water and the tea still tastes great. Joon has this special tea set that allows him to make tea in traditional ways.
We talked hours after lunch with tea and it was such a nice way to spend the afternoon. Maybe next time I invite them for lunch at Tachikawa Garden Town.

The micro coffee roastery in Tachikawa: Taro’s coffee roastery

IMG_20200219_135214

Drinking a cup of coffee every morning with breakfast has been my thing ever since I moved in Tachikawa Garden Town. I usually make a hand brew coffee just for myself. Grinding beans with a handmill is something I like to do even though it takes a while to prepare.
As I drink more coffee, I started to know that there are good coffee and okay coffee out there. I still think the coffee roaster in Berlin called “the barn” sells the best coffee in my opinion but I have been constantly looking for good roasteries in Tokyo as well.

Taro’s Coffee Roastery in Tachikawa

Just on the other day I was going through local news media and I found a local coffee roaster in Tachikawa. Taro’s Coffee Roastery is the name of the roastery and I tried their beans for the first time last week. The only Roastery I know is the one on the basement floor of Lumine called Yanaka Coffee. They do have a micro roastery at the shop and roast the beans of your choice right away. I did try their beans several times and it was great but I wanted to try other roasteries as well.
While Yanakaka coffee is a chain and there are many coffee shops in Tokyo under their brand, Taro’s Coffee Roastery is a family-run micro coffee roastery that only exist in Tachikawa. It is also a new brand that only opened in 2018.

It is not a cafe but a roastery

I was surprised to see how small the Taro’s Coffee roastery is when I visited there for the first time. There was a big coffee roaster machine in the store occupying 80% of the space in the store. You can order a coffee at this place but it is to go only.

IMG_20200219_135154

The choice of beans available seems to be limited. When I went there, there were 10 kinds of beans on the menu. I had a little chat with the owner and he asked me what kind of coffee I usually drink. I said I like the light roasted coffee. Then he recommended to try this beans from India. I got this first coffee he recommended as I have have never tried beans from India before anyway.

IMG_20200219_135144

Here’s the list of beans available. Most of the beans are medium roasted and each beans are described as follows; which country they are from, name of the coffee farm, roast level, and how beans are processed. Most roasters in Tokyo do not write down this many information about coffee beans. Just by looking at the menu, it’s obvious that this owner knows a great deal about coffee beans and I know he will be happy to answer if you ask any questions about the beans.

Look at the one “Ethiopia Yirgacheffe G1 Washed”. This itself is a pretty common beans that you can find in any third wave coffee shops. However, the beans listed right below is the same exact “Ethiopia Yirgacheffe” but this one is not “Washed” but “Natural”. I know the difference as a knowledge because one of my friends are running a coffee roastery but I never got a chance to try the difference with the beans roasted by the same roastery. I think most roasteries do not do this kind of thing. Importing two different raw beans simply means it costs more to buy each beans.
Roasting the same beans with different roasting levels would make more sense and that’s something I see often. This should be coming from this owner’s playful mind which attracts you to order these two beans just to see how they tastes different. This is definitely something I would do next time I go to his roastery.
The minimum order quantity of the beans is 100g and all the beans is affordably priced as you can see.

IMG_20200219_135335

The location of this roastery is here. It is a bit of a walk from Tachikawa station, about 15 mins or so but it’s definitely worth trying their beans.

A new dishwasher installed at Tachikawa Garden Town

IMG_20200217_124816

It’s been almost two years since I moved in Tachikawa Garden Town, one of the Oakhouse Apartments in Tokyo. Many things happened during this period of time but raising a kid is definitely the biggest thing in my life. I knew things are going to be busy before my daughter Hana was born in May, 2018. That’s what everyone told me anyway. So I did some investment on house equipments after I moved in the current apartment. Getting a big high-end fridge (Mitsubishi) was one of the things my wife and I decided to buy as well as getting a good dehumidifier for drying clothes in the house on rainy days. I did not buy a dishwasher back then when we moved in but I bought one just last week and it’s been amazing and we’re very happy that we got it.
I’m pretty sure I’m the only one who got a dishwasher living in Oakhouse. Let me tell you why I got it and things I noticed during the process. If you’re planning to live in Oakhouse for a long time, this post should help you.

Washing dishes is something both of us feel burdened to do

First of all, we still did not have to buy too many things when we moved in because all Oakhouse apartments are usually fully furnished. Our apartment is not a sharehouse but ours was furnished as well. We bought those things just to make our life better and most importantly… to save our time on a daily basis.

スクリーンショット 2020-02-24 20.21.19How the metal rack fit in the kitchen (the left image is AR function of Amazon app)

Everyone knows that doing the house keeping stuff everyday is something very time-consuming. For us, raising a kid is added to the daily task. Since we started a new life at this apartment in 2018, we started realizing that dividing the workload into 50/50 is not a good idea because each of us feels different amount of burden to do specific tasks. For example, I’m okay with cooking food at home because I like cooking and it doesn’t bother me if I have to do it for dinner most of the time. I simply think it’s fun to cook. My wife, on the other hand, not so much. Cooking something is a burden for her. Washing clothes is something opposite. My wife is like the one who would wash everything every single day even if it’s not dirty. It’s kind of like a ritual for her. For me, washing clothes is something I do only when clothes are dirty. I do want to wash underwear everyday. I’m talking about clothes like jeans. Washing certain clothes every day just wear them out. My point is each of us feels less burden to certain tasks and sometimes it’s not a burden at all. So it’s not a problem either of us feel okay with doing the certain tasks. It is a big problem when there is a task that both of us feel burdened to do.

For us, it is washing dishes. It took a while for us to realize this though. I think I feel less burdened to washing dishes because it’s part of the cooking process sometimes. On my good day, there won’t be much dish to wash left when the food is ready to eat. I can be as efficient as that with cooking. However, I’m not as willing to wash if there are too many dishes left in a sink. Raising a kid means you have more dish to wash and kids plate, cups, utensils are pretty hard to wash because they are made out of plastics. There were some days that both us did not fee like washing the dishes and we just kept them in the sink until the morning. Some of the plates are supposed to be washed right after otherwise it gets damaged or even molded in worst case scenario. My wife and I started arguing more and more over this until I came up with installing a dishwasher on the other day.

First I had to check if it’s a feasible idea. Installing a dishwasher should require some kind of professional installation, maybe some pipe work or something. Then I found this extra faucet in the kitchen and I thought maybe this can be utilized for water supply. I started searching online and I found out there needs an adaptor to make it work but I was never sure which one I have to get.

IMG_20200207_094626The extra faucet in Tachikawa Garden Town

I went to a local Bic Camera store and asked the staff but they were not sure either. I finally found out which adaptor I need to get when Bic camera sent a local technician to Garden Town and checked everything on site. This was reassuring. The technician told me that the extra faucet is totally usable and the adaptor is actually 1/6 of the cost compared to a standard adaptor used for the dishwasher. (I spent about 2000 yen for this adaptor but the standard adaptor would cost about 12000 yen). It turned out that Tachikawa Garden Town is a dishwasher friendly apartment.

The machine works just fine

IMG_20200217_124825How dishes fit in the dishwasher

It’s been about two weeks since the dishwasher installation is done and we have been using the machine almost every day. The machine works just fine. I really like the fact that it saves my time and I now enjoy a cup of tea or coffee after dinner. I could have a cup of tea after dinner even before but I didn’t feel like it after spending 20 minutes of hand washing the dishes.
I got the model of NP-TH3 by Panasonic. It’s a large size dishwasher for a small family like us but it’s actually a perfect size because we want to wash pans, cutting board and cooking items with the dishes at the same time.
so far we’re very happy with the machine and we recommend this model.
