In September 2015, my house mates in “Oak house Kichijoji 2” and I took a trip to Yakushima. Yakushima is an island located in the south of Kagoshima, the south of Kyushu. This island is specifically famous for its forest of Yakusugi, which literally means “Japanese cedar on the island of Yakushima”, typically growing at altitudes 500 meters and higher. About 90% of the surface of the island is covered with trees, many of them are part of a primeval forest. Some areas of the forest were designated as UNESCO’s World Heritage area in 1992.

I have been wanting to visit this island for years ever since I heard that Hayao Miyazak was inspired by the beauty of the forest, which helped him create the world of Princess Mononoke.

There was a week long consecutive holidays called “Silver week” in September. Four of us planned the trip about a month before the departure.
Going to the island is a long way partially because of the bad access. You need to go to Kagoshima airport by airplane first, then you either take another plane to Yakushima directly (30mins) or take a bus to Kagoshima port and take a high speed boat to the island which takes about 3 hours.

We spared 4 nights 5 days for this trip but my friend who used to be a Yakushima guide told me 2 nights 3 days is enough if it’s for Jomon Sugi trekking. We took longer because we wanted to stay longer and try some activities other than the trekking. Kayaking is one of the fun activities we happened to find on the island.
Kayaking on the river. The river water is crystal clear.
It’s better to rent a car because the bus is not very convenient on the island. We did rent one and we went to Shiratani Unsui Kyo (白谷雲水峡)on the first day.
Taiko rock. The end point of Shiratani Unsui Kyo area. Breathtaking view of the forest.
We went for the two days long hiking on the 3rd day which turned out to be the toughest day of the trip. Miyanoura dake (宮之浦岳) is the highest mountain in the entire Kyushu region.
Thankfully the lady at the tourist information center in front of Anbou port told us a better trekking plan. If you don’t have a solid idea of where you should visit, consider visiting there.

On the 3rd day, we entered the mountain from the Yodogawa hiking gate, went all the way up to the mountain and stayed at a mountain hut (Shintakazuka koya 新高塚小屋). Unfortunately, it was raining the entire day. By the time we reached the hut we were all drenched. Equipments such as water proof shoes and hiking rainwear are necessary if you know you will be hiking in the rain.

On the way to the mountain top. Resting for a coffee under a huge rock.
The next day was basically going down the mountain, passing by many must-see spots like Jomon Sugi, Wilson’s stump, Meoto cedar, and the trolley trail.
At Jomon-Sugi. The size of the trunk is overwhelming.

Going down the trolley trail. It reminded me of Stand By Me.
If there’s a chance, you should definitely try to go to Yakushima. I’m really glad that I took this trip. Let me know if you want to know more about my trip. My contact info is under the article.

A rare glimpse of solitude.
It feels worse than it looks.
